Hi-Fi Do's Online Newsletter August 7 , 2004 Kyoto is one of popular place for sightseeing in Japan but it is very hot and humid in summer. Kyoto is historical city and there is still traditional custom called "Noryo Yuka" to enjoy the cool breezes of the evening near riverside. Ms. Cappuccino introduces us a nice cafe and guest house in Kyoto in this week. It might be a nice vacation to stay at a typical Japanese guest house and enjoy hot summer in Kyoto-style. I went to Kyoto where is famous for hot and humid place in summer and I found a nice Cafe and Guest house there. This time I would like to introduce "Gojo Guest House" and "Gojo Cafe" which are close to Sanjo and Yonjo in downtown Kyoto. It used to be an famous Japanese-style hotel built 100 years ago but it was remodeled into cafe at the first floor and guest house at the second floor. The owner of Gojo Guest House is Mr. Moriya who comes from Nara. He wanted to live in foreign country and left Japan when he was twenty years old. Later he decided to work for foreign people in Japan and he opened Cafe and Guest House in Kyoto. English website translated by the owner brings many foreign visitors to his guest house. Three foreign guests stayed when I visited there. I had a chance to look over several guest rooms and every rooms seemed comfortable with traditional Japanese style. Mr. Moriya explains Syamisen to foreign guests , which is one of Japanese traditional culture. Mr.and Mrs. Moriya like Rock music but Jazz music is more popular for guests. It can produce quite different sound by cables and amplifiers. I tried it with several amplifier such as Sansui, Marantz, Musical Fidelity but none of them was not suitable for R305. I found Rogers E20a was the best for R305 which I bought at Hi-Fi Do when I drunk. R305 is excellent speaker to listen to classic music, Jazz and especially high vocal tone. The sound by R305 make us comfortable and relaxed. 4."Walking around Akihabara" by Taro Akiba I talked with my friend and the manager of Hi-Fi Do what tubes should be used to make amplifier. I had a idea in my mind that 300B or KT88 might be acceptable. However, the more I read the books about tube, the more difficult to understand it. I asked another friend and he said, "If you make amplifier with 300B, you can sell it right away when you don't want to keep it. " I asked, "What is 300B? Is it a kind of brand like Channel or Luis Vuiton?" "It's exactly as you say. 300B is same as Vuiton." he said. I don't care the brand and finally I decided to make an amplifier by 6V6. I went to Akiharbara to buy several parts. I ordered Power transformer and I bought output transformer, two pair of output tubes by Sylvania, condensers, and resistors. I looked around to find chassis but I could not find my favorite type. Then, I went to Tokyu Hands (DIY) to make a handmade chassis. There were many materials like iron, aluminum, etc. I looked over several materials and I went home.
